Do you thank God for your family?

St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest, who gave his life for a prisoner in Aushwitz, the concentration camp set up by the Nazis in Poland to exterminate people during World War II stepped forward when Franciszek Gajowniczek was chosen to be starved to death along with 10 others and said: “take me in his place I don’t have a wife and five children, I’m a priest, take me instead of him.” Franciszek Gajowniczek when the Nazis chose him to die by starvation began to cry aloud and beg for his life saying: “I have a wife and five children please don’t kill me.” Father Kolbe didn’t have a family and Franciszek Gajowniczek did. Father Kolbe had multiple doctorate degrees and was world famous as an author and lecturer but all the degrees in the world and all the fame in the world doesn’t compare with having a family. Family is paramount in this life.

This was the only time that the Nazis agreed to let one prisoner die in place of another, why? Because Franciszek Gajowniczek’s cries and pleas and desperation for his family: “I have a wife and 5 children” moved the hardened Nazi hearts to some semblance of compassion because they had families as well. No amount of knowledge or intelligence or fame or money or anything else in this world compares to having a family. Your family is number 1 not your job, not your money, not your stuff, not anything in your life is as important as your family. God is a family too! The Holy Trinity - father, son, and Holy Spirit - a family. So having God is having family. It’s all about the family. I thank God for my family today! The family I have not the one I may want to have. And you? Do you thank God for your family? The one you have! Not the one you may want to have! What would you be without your family?
