Laughter is good exercise!

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

An old Yiddish proverb says, "What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul." Everyone knows that laughter makes you feel good and puts you in high spirits, but did you also know that laughter actually causes physiological responses that protect the body from disease and helps your vital organs repair themselves? A good laugh can be compared to a mild workout, as it exercises the muscles, gets the blood flowing, decreases blood pressure and stress hormones, improves sleep patterns and boosts the immune system. Furthermore, a study by the John Hopkins University Medical School showed that humor and laughter can also improve memory and mental performance.

Yet despite the fact that laughter has so many benefits, far too many of us forget to even crack a smile every once in a while, let alone laugh. Be holy...laugh and do it often! God commands us to smile and laugh and in the midst of all we go through to be merry for our gladness is not around us but inside of us and Jesus is in us and with us. Jesus is with you and it’s no longer you who live but Christ who lives in you.

So if Christ is in you and with you how can you be so afflicted by all that is going on around you? Focus on who is with you and in you and rejoice because you are not alone. All will be well. You will be ok.

I am focusing on this proverb from the Bible: “All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.” Proverbs 15:15. I am not afflicted, because Jesus is with me. My heart is cheerful because Jesus lives in it. May the joy of Jesus’ presence be your strength today and everyday as it is mine because this is the day God has made and let us rejoice and be glad in it!
